One of my favorite things about the aleutians are all the old russian orthodox churches. beautiful and unique architecture set amongst some of the most savage landscapes this planet has to offer. seeing as most of them were built in the late 1800’s, it’s pretty impressive that they’re still standing after a century of bering sea winds. this one in unalaska was completed in 1896 but contains some of the original structure from 1808.
fun fact about unalaska! there are wild horses on this island. after ww2 when the army was leaving the island, they didn’t know what to do with all the cavalry horses they had, so they just set them free expecting the harsh winter to k**l them off. as it turns out, they’re rather resilient little creatures and their descendants survive to this day!
did you see the eagle on the cross?
